Author: Margaret Atwood

Title: The handmaid's Tale

One of the first things that intrigued me about Margaret Atwood was that she is a Canadian author. She is universally known as a feminist and social activist, which reflects in many of her novels. I found it fascinating, that she has written such a variety of excerpts, from novels, children's books, literary criticisms, poetry etc. Also, an innumerable amount of her pieces have been published in twenty two different languages.

Margaret Atwood was born a child of three in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Her father, being an entomologist, spent a lot of time in the wilderness of Quebec with Margaret; where she would become very lonely and bored. To replace this she would read books and write peotry, plays and comics. After moving to Toronto she finally attended school full-time, and at this point she was eleven years old. She always knew she wanted to become a writer. After graduating high school she moved on to study at Victoria College at the University of Toronto. At the same time that she recieved her bachelor's degree, she had published her first book (a book of her poems). Soon after she began graduate studies at Harvard's Radcliffe College and obtained her master's degree, moving on to further studies at Harvard University but did ot finish.

As a child, Margaret Atwood was always encouraged to read by her parents. From her past in the Quebec wilderness, to avoid boredom she became fascinated with reading and writing at an early age; even though she never attended full-time school until she was 11. She was always intrigued with fairy tales, gothic romance and other fantasies. "The Juniper Tree" and "Fitcher's Bird" were two of her favourite stories because she liked how the they did not have the conventional storyline like that of "Cinderella" or "Sleeping Beauty". The heroines of these stories show considerable wit and resourcefullness and usually win, not just by being pretty and virtuous, but by using their smarts. Also, When Atwood studied at the University of Toronto, she met a literary critic Northrop Fry. She enjoyed his myth criticism and Jungian ideas, they greatly influenced her. atwood was also, greatly influenced by the poet Edgar Allen Poe.
